Sandal Cougars made the short trip to South Yorkshire to play Wheatley Hills. The home side looked very different from the side that The Cougars beat in January, clearly benefiting from their first team having a free weekend.
The Cougars played into a strong blustery wind in the first half and the hosts made their intentions clear from the off with cheap shots at every opportunity. The Cougars kept on going but Wheatley were using their powerful runners to good effect and posted the first score and shortly after that they kicked a penalty to go 10-0 up. The Cougars then started to play good rugby and scored 2 well worked tries from Scott Seckham and Andy Evetts with Scott Seckham converting from wide out. The Cougars went into half time 12-10 up and now had the wind with them.
The visitors started the second half with their rugby doing the talking. An excellent charge down and great footballing skills from Rob Overton saw The Cougars move further ahead.
A loose kick from a Wheatley back was collected by Thurlow and from here The Cougars put on the best move of the game. Several members of the Wakefield outfit were involved and excellent quick hands, saw Evetts score in the corner. Wheatley put some sustained pressure in The Cougars half and were rewarded with a converted try.
The Cougars scrum was functioning very efficiently and Wicks and Purcell were having great games in the loose. Birthday boy, Evetts led the way in defence with a monster smash on a Wheatley forward.
Two more tries from Matt Broadhead and Scott Seckham and 3 conversions out wide from Scott Seckham allowed The Cougars to play the game out comfortably, and win 38-17. Heath are the visitors to Milnthorpe Green in what is the last league game of the season.
