Sandal Cougars 22 - Old Brodleians 12
Sandal Cougars held host in a Merit Table fixture to an Old Brodleians side who top the league with a 100% record this season. However, as a strong wind blew, the Milnthorpe Green men roared into action to record their forth straight victory in as many weeks and send their visitors packing, without pausing for clubhouse refreshments.
Only five minutes in and Sandal were on the score sheet, their forward domination led by skipper Paul Brennan, set the platform for what was a memorable win. A powerful display of rucking and mauling from the Sandal pack allowed prop Luke Norbury to bag his first try of the game with Edge converting from the touchline. Brods were then gifted a lifeline to score and convert after a mix up in the Cougars defence.
However, Sandal’s response was immediate as robust flanker Tim Wicks tore through the Brods pack and was driven over to touch down. A try saving tackle from Charlie Pearce ended the half 12-7 in Sandal’s favour.
Playing down the slope, Sandal started the 2nd half at pace and srum half marshal Brett Hunt worked the ball to the blind side and fed winger Damian Edge who stepped inside his opposite number and raced away to the corner. Although Brods managed a consolation try, the last word belonged to Sandal. A typical bulldozing run from powerhouse prop James Purcell deep into opposition territory was rewarded when fellow prop Norbury claimed his brace of tries as Sandals forwards united to drive him over the line.
The game ended with Sandal looking for their fifth try of the game and now, having ended Old Brods unbeaten run, look to avenge an earlier defeat in the season next week with a home league fixture against York, kick off 2-15.
