Sandal Cougars took to a very muddy field looking to continue their
excellent recent form, and were on the scoreboard after 2 minutes, when
a crafty 22 metre restart from Dan Hodson and breakout down the right
wing, followed by good passing across the field saw Scott Seckham score
in the corner.
In the 9th minute Brett Hunt broke from his own half but was chased down
in the Wheatley Hills 22 and the attack came to nothing, but a couple of
minutes later Sandal attacked from a lineout near the visitors' line,
and Scott Seckham joined the line from full back and dummied to score. 10-0.
Wheatley Hills then rallied, and a try from a 5 metre scrum reduced the
Cougars' lead to 10-7 in the 15th minute, but Sandal were quick to reply
in kind, with prop James Purcell forcing his way over following good
support work from the forwards.
In the 28th minute Wheatley Hills were caught offside at a ruck, and
Edge kicked the penalty to make the half-time score 18-7.
In the second half Sandal went on the attack immediately, and after
three minutes of sustained pressure the visitors were penalised at the
ruck again, allowing Edge to kick another penalty. This turned out to
be the final score of the match, with the heavy pitch reducing the game
to an arm-wrestle, with James Chappell and the visitors' number 8 sent
to the sin bin following an off-the-ball incident.
Sandal travel to Selby on Saturday in another crucial merit table clash.
