SANDAL COUGARS 50 – 5 YORK
Sandal Cougars cruised past York to earn their fifth straight league win in as many weeks. It was evident after just five minutes that Sandal were in no mood to slip up against a big York side that had narrowly beaten them earlier in the season. Sandals forwards were in devastating form and regularly tore through the York pack, none more so than ‘man on a mission’ prop James Purcell. Supported by a pack who have learnt to play as a unit, Sandal’s supply of second and third phase ball leading to powerful driving mauls meant that number 8 Danny Wild was able to bag himself a brace of tries. Flanker Tim Wicks and Second row Dave Bott also touched down for the home side during a game where forward domination was the key to a great victory.
When the ball did find its way into the backs, full back Scott Seckham was on hand to slice through the York three-quarters crossing the line four times for a personal tally of twenty points. Centres Liam Hunt and Alex Seckham stopped any York counter attack at source as York chased the game in the second half, though they did manage a consolation try with an overlap after Sandal’s attack had broken down. Damian Edge slotted five conversions to complete the rout.
Sandal have the ability to finish at least second in the league on this sort of performance with only six league games left. Premier side Ilkley 2nds have challenged Cougars to a ‘curtain raiser’ next week at home (k.o 12-30) before the crucial league game between the respective 1st teams (k.o 2-15).
