Sandal 48 Heath 7
Sandal got their league campaign off to a flying start by overpowering newly promoted Heath in an eight try display. The Milnthorpe Green men opened their account on four minutes when scrum half Max Whittingham dummied his way over on the blind side of the scrum following a pick up and feed by no. 8 Richard Wade. From the re-start Heath went on the attack and threatened to break the line on a couple of occasions but poor hands let them down and when they spilled the ball a couple of quick passes saw winger Simon Frewin clear and he scorched 80 metres to the try line leaving the cover in his wake to cross under the posts with fly half Tom Smith converting. This was repeated shortly after as Frewin again had too much pace as he powered over from twenty metres out with Smith again converting. Heath continued to put up a fight but too often their basic handling skills failed them and Sandal continued their clinical finishing with flanker Jack Smith crossing close to the posts after good work again by Frewin with his brother Tom Smith converting again and then winger Dave Ell crossing wide out on the stroke of half time to give his side an unassailable thirty one point to nil lead at the break.
Fired up by their half time team talk from head coach and ex-Morley and Yorkshire fly half Kevin Plant visitors Heath finally woke up and scored a try two minutes into the half through fly half Piper who converted it himself. Stung by this Sandal responded five minutes later with winger Frewin completing his hat trick of tries when he went clear from forty metres out following a clean break by flanker jack Smith from his twenty two with Tom Smith again converting. From that point on the game settled down but the home side continued to threaten to score from deep and crossed twice more through prop Rob Norbury and centre Danny Mitchell to complete a good afternoon’s work.
Director of Rugby Angus Moran said “That was a good start to the season but we still made quite a few errors . The new lads performed well and full back Chris Reakes did superbly in what was his first competitive senior outing since schoolboy rugby. We will continue to work hard in training and now look forward to the Keighley game this weekend.”
Sandal welcome Keighley to Milnthorpe Green this Saturday (kick off 3pm) for their second league game of the new campaign.
