Sandal raced into an early lead with some nice forward tries from JK and George Hep. Dominant in the scrum, and threats from out wide it looked as though the score line could have blown out from the start. However, partly due to not taking opportunities and partly due to ponte’s scrapping spirit, those 2 tries were sandals scoring only points in the first half.
The 2nd half was mixture of free flowing rugby with Handley and Caelum proving a threat whenever they touched the ball, with the latter scoring 2 long range tries, and stoppages in play for minor disagreements between the teams.
Not to be outdone however, the forwards got involved in some of the Jouè with JK creating a lovely try with a lovely flick ball.
Unfortunately disagreements between players interrupted any free flowing rugby and it felt as though Sandal left points out there in both halves.
A 43-10 win away from home however isn’t something to be sniffed at. The 2nd team have a real identity about how they’ve played all year with forwards working hard in threes and taking tough carries, and then a freedom to have go in the backs will always be tough to defend. While this perhaps wasn’t quite perfectly executed in todays fixture, the blue print is there for sterner tests to come.
One of the highlights of today was seeing George heptinstall get the ball underneath his is own posts, throw a 20 yard pass to brother Olly who romped up the wing for 40 some metres in front of an army of Heptinstalls family and friends on the sidelines.
Sandal may well be on the look out for 1 more friendly before a semi final on the 20th April. This is the furthest the 2nd team have ever got in this league and there is certainly a feeling amongst Hulme, Knowles and Hoyland that this season is going to finish on a massive high.
