Sandal again got out the blocks quickly and made a fast start and again it was Seckham with the early try. Barlow converted for the perfect start.
The following 15 minutes were back and forth with both teams doing well in boggy conditions. Scunthorpe eventually made a break through from a speculative cross field kick and soon after took the lead with a barge over try.
In poor conditions, liquid rugby was produced at the start of the second half. After a number of phases and string carries from AJ, Bacon and Nyambega, Hodgkiss made a good carry down the blind side, offloaded to Handley, who smartly got the ball to winger Will Poching as he was been tackled. Will then rounded the full back and scored under the sticks.
What followed was a barrage of Scunthorpe pressure on sandal line. Heroic tackles from Hoyland, Beeney and Hodgkiss kept Scunthorpe at bay. After soaking up 10 plus minutes on the line, eventually Scunthorpe scored from a chip and chase from 10metres out.
Some excellent kicking from Hulme, Barlow and Ali Scott gave sandal some much needed field position. With a Scunthorpe scrum 5 meters out from their own line, Hulme picked the pocket of the Scunthorpe 8 and crashed over.
Controversy followed with the conversation. With the score at 19-19 with the kick to come, Barlow managed a lovely strike. One linesman raised his flag, the other did not. The referee subsequently chose not to award the conversation. Fuel was then lit for the return fixture with the game ending in a melee following a large, questionably high hit on the Scunthorpe 9 from Milner.
