Last Minute Converted try keeps the 2s immaculate home record for the season!
Sandal 2s vs Sheffield
What a game! A back and forth encounter where Sandal never led until the final play was decided by the last kick of the game. Of course Ben Vickers nailed it.
Sheffield started the better of the two sides and in the first passage of play we’re able to put 10+ phases together. While sandal defended well, a penalty allowed Sheffield into the 22 and they took the first points.
Sandals pack went to work at scum time and gained early dominance and really got into the game with strong carries down the hill. A chip over the top from Hali was collected by Byrne who freed Seckham to score.
Both teams exchanged tries in the 1st half as sandal were punished for one too many offloads in the opposition 22. Going into the half 12-10 up and going down the hill, it looked as though Sheffield had a big advantage. This was indeed the case as they came out the 2nd half fast. 2 quick fire tries looked to have won the game at 26-10.
Momentum changed however as the sandal pack took control. Scrum continued to dominate. Ball carries started to get over the gain line with regularity and it became all Sandal.
After a build up of pressure, Hali scored a nice individual try beating his opposite number.
With 4 minutes to go, 9 points down is still however looked unlikely. All the play was now in the Sheffield half and after a build up of pressure, a yellow card was branded in front of the posts. The decision was made to take the points, bringing the deficit to 6 and securing a losing bonus point. The Uruk-Hai however wanted more!
From the kick off the ball was taken cleanly. A couple of phases later Vickers freed Rafi up the left. A Spurr carry with an offload to Wilson was followed by an offload to Hulme. Hulme found Hali who from just inside the half struck the ball cleanly landing a 50-22.
Bailey crucially hit his man at the line out, and the forwards got to work. Relentless carries saw us build and build. Ward Nyambega and Bailey in particular, close to the line a Bacon carry got some quick ball and Elliot ward, who was phenomenal all game, got over despite attention from 2 Sheffield players.
15 in from touch. Sandal 25 Sheffield 26. Kick to come. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Vickers nails the conversion.
