In the archetypal game of two halves. a 29 all draw probably proved a fair result, despite it looking like sandal were going to pull off the comeback of the century.
24-5 down at half time, it was fair to say that the majority of Sandal’s play was below the standards set before the Christmas period. I’ll discipline and a lack of intensity in defence allowed Ilkley into the game and at times scored with relative ease. Our score came from a number of phases and a few penalties forced before Handley was able to set Kelly free in the corner. Ilkley's tries came from a couple of driving mauls and a long range effort.
The comeback started with a much improved defensive effort. The first 3 tackles in the 2nd half were all big hits, with Parker, Hanson and Kelly responsible. Scores from JK and Kelly, both in similar fashion after a series of phases were able to power over from close range.
The big tackles continued to come, Seckham and Hulme responsible this time with a continued better attitude towards defence. Sandal were 14 points down with 10 minutes left but it certainly seemed momentum was with us. At this point, all the pressure was on Ilkley, who to their credit, defended well holding players up over the line. Eventually pressure told and Hali was able to put Kelly through a gap to score, importantly under the posts. And with just under 5 minutes left, Hali assisted again with a nice inside pass for Seckham to score untouched.
Ilkley at this point we’re holding on, and had another man sin binned. Sandal worked the ball up the field and into the 22, it certainly felt as though the comeback was well and truly on. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Ilkley were able to win the ball back and kick off the pitch.
Final score Ilkley 29 Sandal 29
