Sandal made the brighter start and the first half was defined by 5 scoring opportunities. Sandal missed a penalty, scored a nice try through a clever line out with Reynolds been the benefactor and unfortunately fluffed a chance from the forays into the Sheffield 22. Sheffield with their 2 opportunities converted a penalty and scored a nice try following a sustained period of attack.
Despite been in arrears 10-5 at the break, this was a promising 1st half and probably deserved to lead. This was a drastic improvement on the starts to games in previous weeks.
In what was a tight game for the most part, a sloppy 15 minute period at the start of the 2nd cost the visitors any real chance of victory. In fairness, as they have been in previous seasons, a well drilled Sheffield side took advantage of this, and scored twice in this period.
Sandal briefly showed what has made us one of the better sides in this league, built phases in the forwards, and made dents with a Seckham Kay center partnership. A Jones try with around 15 minutes to go took the score to 22-12 and ignited a chance of a comeback.
Again credit must go to Sheffield, who thwarted any chance of this while other teams may have given us a sniff at the end, it wasn’t meant to be. Spurr left his mark on the substitute winger, resulting in a yellow card and Sheffield were the final team score following a near full length effort.
Attention now turns to a run home games with Goole, Alnwick and Scunthorpe to come in the next 3 weeks.
The final mention must go to Richard Travis-Carr who put in a dominant forward performance, with near double figure turn overs, a couple of line breaks and high involvements in all other aspects of the game!
Final score Sheffield 27 Sandal 12
