In a game that started wet, got wetter and for a brief period had hail, the sandal pack got to work and in the end was too strong. The first scrum was a sign of things to come and with a strong set piece, tremendous tight ball carry and for the most part great game management Sandal came out victorious.
With 2 props playing in the centre and a back row on the wing the game plan was simple. We go through the front door.
Jarvis started the try scoring off the back of a dominant scrum and after multiple forward plays will Kettel got in is the corner. Credit must go to York, who had it have been a dry day may have fancied their chances, managed to get themselves back into the game with a well worked try after a period of pressure. Reynolds and JK rounded off the scoring in the first half.
The hailstorm hit just after half time but this didn’t dampen the sandal pack. The front row in particular were loving it. Parker and Hoyland were industrious, relentless and carried well and Will Booth was absolutely outstanding.
Try’s in the second half came from vickers (who yet again kicked brilliantly from the tee), hepinstall and Garrity, basically coming from determination in atrocious conditions. This was summed up by a 15 metre pick and go from Ohara, carrying players with him as he went.
On debut Freddie Lambert and Cal Marshall both look great additions to a growing pack. This second team seem to building nicely towards the play offs at the end of the season. A big game at home next week against another top 4 team will be a great test.
