Sandal Second XV got the new season off to a winning start away to Wath on Saturday the 5th October. Wath dominated the opening 15 minutes of the game and whilst they kept Sandal pinned back in their own twenty two for much of this time they failed to put any points on the board. Sandal began to play their way back into the game with some great line breaks from the forward pack new boy Billy Addy, who at Number Eight made an impressive start and earned himself the man of the match award by the final whistle. Five minutes of ill discipline from Wath and they found themselves down to thirteen men with a red and a yellow card. Sandal profited and Jacob Barlow kicked the first points of the match. From the restart there was some good running rugby from Richard Hoyland and Michael Knowles, and John Guy put Jacob Barlow through for a try under the sticks and a simple conversion to follow. Ten points up and with the extra man advantage Sandal began to dominate at the set piece and following yet another penalty at the scrum, a quick tap and go from Captain Knowles saw the ball once again dotted down beneath the sticks by Jacob Barlow and his successful conversion brought an end to the first half.
In the second half Sandal began where they had left off in the Wath twenty two. A great effort from the fourteen Wath players kept Sandal at bay with their defensive line speed putting Sandal under pressure and cool heads were needed as forward passes and dropped balls denied Sandal two early tries in the half. Eventually Sandal’s possession paid off with tries from Scott Seckham, following a great break from Michael Coopey and a Jamie Bingle pass who put Richard Hoyland through for Sandal’s fourth try. Jacob Barlow successfully converted both of them and whilst Wath never gave up and indeed edged the last ten minutes, this was the final score of the game leaving Sandal winners 31 – 0.
