Sandal second XV began brightly against Sheffield Engineers on Saturday and were one try to the good within ten minutes after full back Scott Cranmer crossed beneath the posts leaving Jacob Barlow with an easy conversion.
Playing up the hill Sandal were awarded a penalty on Sheffield’s twenty two, from the resulting scrum a sniping run up the blind side from George Hulme linked up with Jason Kay whose off load in the tackle found support runner Carter Bower Stead scoring Sandals second try of the afternoon, once again Jacob Barlow made sure of the conversion.
Following a string of penalties and a yellow card against Sandal, Sheffield seized the initiative and scored a try in the corner, they missed the conversion.
From the restart Sandal hit back straight away with Jacob Barlow taking the points from yet another penalty making the score seventeen – five at half time.
Sheffield closed the gap to seventeen – ten within minutes of the second half starting, although they failed to capitalize further on the opportunities given them by a poor second half performance from the home side.
The final ten minutes of the match saw Sandal begin to regain some of their earlier composure, a great break down the wing from debutant Joe King and several line breaks from hooker Jamie Bingle had them once again in the Sheffield half and from here Scott Cranmer scored his second of the afternoon with Jacob Barlow making good the conversion and the last score of the match.
