2nd team have now gone 160 minutes with 0 points scored against them, 3rd fixture this season with 0 opposition points scored

On a cold grey day, Sandal second team, third in the Yorkshire Championship South League, took on ninth placed Dinnington at Sandal on the first team pitch. Sandal needed a good win to secure a second place in the league behind Otley. The sizable crowd were not disappointed with Sandal, under the captaincy of Michael Knowles giving the crowd an excellent example of open rugby and notched up a 55 points to nil win.

A total of nine tries were scored and 5 conversions. The first and second tries were scored by Joe Stott, full back, a speedy player with great potential. The play continued with Dinnington making strong runs, but were denied tries by Sandal's great tackling the best by center Michael Coopey who prevented a certain try on the Dinnington left wing with an excellent diving tackle. In the last 10miutes of the half Sandal started moving the ball well and scored 3 tries: Harrison Byrne left wing showing great pace, ran in from 30 meters, Stott got the extras. Then Scott Seckham got quick ball from scrum half and Vice Captain George Hulme on the half way line and stepped three tackle attempts to score under the posts. Finally, back row Eddy Pitchford, following fast passing by Tom Smith and winger Jason Kay, cut the angle from the left wing and wrong footing the defence to score a 20 meter try on the right of the posts. Coopey and Stott got a conversion each. 31 nil to Sandal at half time.

The first 25 minutes of the second half Sandal defended their try line, the Dinnington attack was relentless, but Sandal's stoic defence held firm throughout, all tackled well, but thanks to centers Seckham and Coopey, certain tries were stopped..

Winger Harrison Byrne broke the deadlock gaining the ball and sprinting to the half way. The ball moved to the right with props Jamie Bingle and Richard Hoyland and hooker Daz Tuttiett punching holes in the defence. Hulme spun the ball via Seckham and Stott to Sam Edge, right wing, who scored in the corner. The next try came following a scrum, the ball was spun out by Hulme and again from a breakdown to centre Michael Coopey who scored a good try to make the score 41 nil to Sandal.

The last ten minutes, the ball was moving quickly by Sandal, all were focused, on occasions the ball too hard spun for close passing was fumbled, but on the whole excellent.

Sandal were camped in Dinnington's 22, the ball going left and right from breakdowns. One such pass from Hulme via Smith and Bingle found second row Tom Knapton on the left wing, he drew the defence and using Jason Kay, Sandal's left winger, dummied to him and went inside to score under the posts, Stott got the extras. The final try came again following a scrum, Hulme gained the ball, quick hands found centre Michael Coopey who scored his second try near the post, Stott again got the extras.

Credit goes to Dinnington who, despite the score, never gave up and gave Sandal a hard game. A special mention goes to Taylor Garwood, openside flanker, and Jon Guy, second row, who tackled their hearts out and never stopped following the ball. The man of the match was deservedly given to centre Scott Seckam. Next week Sandal second team play Osset away in a friendly, a great opportunity to give the bench more playing time.
