Sandal 2s played in a tough pre season friendly against one of the other top teams in the league. The game also marked an important moment for a great character of the club.

Michael Knowles made his long awaited return to rugby after a 2 and a half year absence. His presence on the sideline has been unwavering during this hiatus and it was only fitting that a squad of 35+ players, many of whom have since hung up their boots, made cameos to mark the occasion.

The 1st half of the game was extremely competitive, with both sides defending and scrambling hard. Sheffield made the brighter start and scored early on. The next 20 or so minutes was very even. Sandal had plenty of time down in the oppositions 22 but were only rewarded with a single try after a couple of bombed chances. At half time the score was a very competitive 10-7 to Sheffield.

The 2nd half of the game saw Sheffield open up as regular substitutes were made. They showed clear intent to play from everywhere and scored some eye catching tries with a couple of chip and chase efforts.

An ever changing Sandal team struggled to maintain pace but to their credit, after a flurry of points against, continued to play when we were able to get the ball actually produced some great stuff.

There are no doubts that there is plenty of improvements to be made, however the game finished in fitting manner. RTC, who scored twice from close range. His final try from the final play of the game was in front of the sticks.

Michael, who has never kicked a convertion in his life lined up. He needed some help balancing the ball on the cone, stood over the ball. A deep breath. 3 steps back. 2 to the left. A deep breath. Approached the small and smashed it between the posts.

Final scored Sandal 19 Sheffield 42

Next up a double header away at Driffield and the start of the season proper for the 2s.

Many thanks JRD
