Player Spotlight: Mac Walsh

Player Spotlight: Mac Walsh

Megan Lindenmayer

This season, we’re getting to know the people behind the players, their rugby, their experiences and what Sandal means to them.

Driven by improvement, passionate about the people around him and determined to see just how far he can take his rugby, while helping those around him do the same.

Meet Mac Walsh.

For Mac, rugby has always been about improvement.

First introduced to the game through school, he was immediately drawn to the physical side of rugby and the challenge of testing himself against others. That competitive edge has stayed with him, but so has the desire to keep learning and developing.

Away from rugby, much of his time is still centred around training and finding ways to improve; whether that's getting stronger, becoming faster, developing his skills or simply understanding the game better.

For him, it's about those small margins.
“I pride myself on those 1% efforts that others don't do.”

That mindset has shaped the way he approaches both rugby and life: keep putting the work in, keep pushing his limits and see what might be possible.

The Work that Matters

As a back, Mac believes one of the most overlooked parts of the game is momentum.
Creating positive momentum for Sandal, while stopping it for the opposition, it isn't always about the moments that make the highlights. It can be a try-saving tackle, chasing back when everyone else is tiring or putting in extra effort that never appears on the scoresheet.

Those moments might not always get the recognition, but they can completely change the direction of a game and that's something he enjoys about rugby, the parts that aren't necessarily about individual skill, but are essential to the team succeeding.

More than a Game

For all the work that goes into becoming a better player, one of the biggest things rugby has given Mac is the people.

Throughout his rugby journey, he's met people from different backgrounds, careers and stages of life, from younger players finding their feet, to people building careers and families, to older players bringing years of experience and a different perspective.

Being around those different mindsets has given him the opportunity to keep learning, not just as a player but as a person.

Whether it's their approach to rugby, work or life, there's always something to learn.

Why Sandal?

That sense of community is a huge part of what keeps him coming back to Sandal every week.
Having experienced different environments throughout his rugby career, he says the sense of community at Sandal is something he hasn't experienced to the same extent elsewhere.
People turn up because they genuinely want to be there.

There's a real buy-in from everyone involved, creating an environment where people work hard for one another and genuinely want to see the club succeed. And for Mac, being part of that also means having the opportunity to give something back.

Alongside his playing career, Mac coaches within the UR7’s development pathway, helping young athletes improve their core skills, movement quality and decision-making. Mac also supports coaching within our U18 Girls Academy. Having learned plenty through his own rugby journey, being able to pass some of that experience on to the next generation is something he finds genuinely rewarding.

Memories worth Keeping

There have already been some standout moments in his time at Sandal.
On a personal level, scoring a hat-trick against Blaydon is right up there, but some achievements mean even more when they're shared.

For the team, winning the Yorkshire Cup stands out as a defining moment, the kind of success players work towards throughout a season and one made even more special by experiencing it alongside such a close group.

Looking Ahead

With another season underway, Mac’s focus is simple: keep improving, keep working and make the most of every opportunity that comes his way.

He has ambitions to test himself at Championship level, but that sits alongside a much bigger desire to continue developing and see what he can achieve through hard work.

And, just as importantly, he believes this Sandal squad has the potential to have a really strong season. The group feels more rounded than in previous years, and if the team can build momentum early and get things right from the start, he believes there's an opportunity to challenge towards the top end of the table.

Getting Sandal into National Two would be a huge achievement for everyone involved with the club and one that Mac believes this squad has the quality and togetherness to chase.

For him, it's about continuing to put the work in, contributing to the team around him and seeing just how far they can take it.
