The Opportunity

Senior Men’s Backs Coach / Player-Coach

Sandal RUFC is an ambitious, forward-thinking club competing in Regional 1 North East, with a clear vision to build a sustainable, high-performing rugby programme from Academy through to senior rugby.

With a young, driven senior squad and a strong 2nd XV pushing standards, we are seeking either a:

Senior Men’s Backs Coach, or
Experienced Player-Coach

to lead, shape and evolve our attacking identity.

This is a key role within a club that values alignment, development and long-term growth, not just short-term results.

The Role

Working closely with the Director of Rugby and wider coaching group, you will:

Lead the technical and tactical development of the backs unit
Design and deliver engaging, game-aligned training sessions
Implement and evolve a clear attacking framework and identity
Support individual player development plans
Contribute to selection, analysis and matchday strategy
Drive standards around preparation, accountability and behaviours
Key Alignment Responsibility

A critical part of this role is ensuring alignment across the club pathway:

Work closely with Academy Director
Collaborate with 2nd XV coaching staff
Ensure consistent playing structure, terminology and philosophy from U16–Senior rugby

This is central to Sandal’s long-term vision.

[b]Option 1: Senior Backs Coach[/b]

Essential:
RFU ERCA (England Rugby Coaching Award) qualified
Experience coaching at Level 6 (Regional 2) or above
Proven track record of developing players and improving performance

Strong understanding of:
Attack structure
Game management
Transition play

Desirable
National League experience
Experience leading analysis and review processes
Ability to mentor and support other coaches

Option 2: Player-Coach (Backs)

Essential:
Playing experience at National League Level 2 or above
Currently playing or recently competing at a high level
Working towards or willing to work towards coaching qualifications (minimum Level 2)
Strong leadership presence and standards-driven mindset

Role Expectations:
Contribute on-field while supporting backs development
Help embed attacking clarity and decision-making
Support younger players transitioning into senior rugby
Assist with review, analysis and session delivery

Commitment
Two evening training sessions per week
Saturday matchday involvement
Pre-season planning and review sessions
