The history of 'Friends of Sandal RUFC 200 Club'

Peter Tunningley7 Sep 2020 - 08:24

Monthly draw offers all entrants regular winnings.

The “Friends of Sandal R.U.F.C.” bank account was opened in 1995 and acted as a second account for the Club handling donations. All donations were used to support the fabric of the clubhouse and its infrastructure. When the clubhouse was officially opened on 8th May 1999 the need for maintenance was greatly reduced and donations were redirected to purchasing items for the players including shorts and socks – donations were not significant amounts.
The demise of the Wakefield R.U.F.C. in 2004 brought an influx of players and members to Sandal along with its 200 Club. The secretary at Wakefield at the time, Roger Parkinson, brought an amount of money and a number of its members who still are contributors to the 200 club. Sandal members have added to the club numbers over the years and currently we have 58 people paying monthly amounts of £20, £10 or £5 together with several paying an annual amount. Roger still administers the monthly draw that takes place at the Club on a Monday during the month. Monthly prizes of £100, £75, £25, £25 and £15 are paid. Profit from the 200 club is about £180 each month and this is retained in the “Friends of Sandal” account.
The bank account is administered by Peter Tunningley, the Club President, Howard Newton who is a past President and Michael Lawson – all three are long serving committee members.
The profit is used to fund expenditure within the Club that are generally new items of equipment and, in the extreme, some urgent items of clubhouse maintenance that cannot be met immediately from club resources.
Payment of players has never been sourced from this income.
If you wish to take part in the draw you can set up a standing order to the ‘Friends of Sandal R.U.F.C.’ account at Lloyds Bank sort code 30-99-01 Account No. 00286933. Reference ‘your name’. It is important that you inform the club of your contact details in order that any prizes can be sent on – email the club at ‘sandalrugby@btconnect.com’.
