The Sandal girls were back on the road with a trip to sunny Scarborough.
From the Kick off Izzy got the girls heading in the right direction with a great take and strong drive. Great work at the breakdown from the pack gave Lillie D a bit of space and she carved through midfield only to be hauled down just short. Continued strong work from Sophie and Orla brought Sandal up to the line and a quick pick up and drive from captain Poppy crashing over for the first score.
From the kick off Sandal continued to dominate but a couple of errors led to a scrum which the Sandal girls managed to turn into their orwn ball with a strong drive. Bea then fed Lily Platt, making her long awaited debut, and she showed her class to ghost through the defence to score.
From the kick off Lauren made a dominating charge up the centre. Great support from Sophie and Grace created clean ball which Bea spun out to Orla who saw a gap near the ruck and broke through to score.
With confidence growing the slightest bit of danger was shut down quickly with Grace chopping down any opposition attacks and quick breakdown work from Poppy and Ava turning the ball over repeatedly, allowing the Sandal girls to continue to dominate possession. Esther made a great break on the left after good handling from the Lily/Lillie combo and a couple of quick rucks later Orla found herself in space again, this time drawing in the defence and timing a lovely pass out to a charging Lucy who touched down to finish off another great team try.
With a constant supply of quality ball from the forwards, Lily started to run the game from fly half. Some fantastic lines of running from the back line creating space all over and Lillie (our Dave) took advantage to burst through and get reward for her menacing runs with a great try.
With Scarborough struggling at the breakdown a series of penalties were tapped and fed to Olivia who caused havoc smashing through the pack time and time again. Great support work from Ava and Lauren kept driving the ball onwards and forward of the match Poppy then took full advantage and stepped through a gap, reaching out to touch down for her second score.
Daisy started to find space around the breakdown and made a great break which was only stopped by Scarborough’s number 8, and their player of the match, making a great last ditch tackle. From the scrum another turnover led to a fantastic play in which Lily bamboozled the opposition with Esther and Lillie running great decoy lines to feed Lucy out wide to score her second. From the kick off Olivia made a punishing run up the middle and great support from Lauren and Izzy drew in even more defenders. Back of the match Lily continued to pull the strings in the midfield and when the ball came again to Lucy out wide she was never going to be stopped from claiming her hat trick despite a desperate defence from Scarborough.
Daisy continued to cause problems with fast breaks from scrum half taking advantage of a tiring Scarborough defence. The forward pack supporting her well and after a sequence of pick and drives Sophie powered over. A rare period of pressure from Sandal was halted by a great clearing kick by Lily to get sandal up to half way. From the next scrum and In the final play of the day Lillie stepped through space in the centres to find a great line and score another richly deserved try. Orla duly converted taking her tally to 5 from 6 having had an outstanding day from the tee.
The girls showed fantastic team work today, backing each other up and using good handling to create space for each other. After a great start to the season next weekends festival will bring the best of the teams in the North to provide a sterner test of how well the girls are playing.
