Determined Defence Key To Strong Performance

Sandal's Junior Colts kick started their 2018/19 campaign against old adversary Roundhegians on a hot afternoon at the home of the North Leeds club.

The team, comprising a mixture of u16s and u17s, got off to a strong start moving the ball forward confidently. It was however the home team who got the first converted score against the run of play. It wasn't long before the Sandal team equalled the try count. A burst of forward play including a mazy run from prop Toby Brotherton supported by lock Mikey Magee, brought the attack up to the opposition's 22. With the North Leeds team sucked into the defence, the ball was spun out to the backs and centre Ibrahim Shamchiyev kicked a delicate chip over the defence for wing Jack Guy to kick forward and run onto score. The conversion was missed but Sandal were next to score. Again the forwards were dominant in the ruck and open play with strong runs from number 8 Josh Norbury and flanker George Jones. With the defence scrambling, the backs were able to advance with half-backs Jacob Dransfield & Will Brooke feeding centre Will Joyce taking the ball forward. The ball was moved out to wing Ed Hill who danced around the defence to score. The conversion by Shamchiyev took the score to 12 - 7 to Sandal at half-time.

A determined Roundhegians side were stopped with strong defence across the park particularly from prop Joe Bacon & second-rows Will Poynton & Alex Mattock. Ultimately pressure paid and Roundhegians were able to score but with no conversion the tie was all square at 12 - 12. Sandal rallied and the forwards took control. Waves of pressure from the pack including hooker Cam West and flanker Jack Baxter brought the Sandal team close to the line. The final push was led by captain Calvin Mitchell who received a pass from replacement scrum half Will and went over to take the score to 17-12. The conversion kicked by Yusif Shamchiyev proved decisive. Roundhegians came back but were unable to convert leaving the score at 19-17 to Sandal with minutes to play. A determined Sandal defence across the team, with fast line speed from the backs typified by Joshua Stevenson, kept the home side out and Sandal finished deserved winners 19-17.
