Sandal U8s traveled to a sunny, if initially chilly, West Park Leeds for an enjoyable contest on their astroturf pitch. Sandal brought 17 players against WPL's nine, so we loaned them a few to even out the numbers and enable two 6-a-side games to take place (with subs). Full credit to the Sandal players who volunteered to don the black bibs and go up against their team-mates!
On wide but short pitches, defence was always going to be key and it was good to see players putting their training into practice, tracking opponents sideways, maintaining a stable line, and pushing forwards to squeeze WPL when possible - something that prompted several mistakes and turnovers that led to tries. For whatever reason, Sandal were really on the ball this week, and consistently faster in thought and action than West Park. Maybe the tough workout they were given at Old Brods the previous week sharpened reactions. One area where they particularly shone was in sweeping up loose ball and then making the most of the disordered field situation - skills which will increasingly come into play through the age-groups: it's an encouraging sign!
All in all, it was a very enjoyable day in north Leeds. Congratulations to the players of the day, Arthur Herdson and Daniel Caldow, for their performances and attitude but in truth the whole squad did the club proud. Thanks also to the parents who gave their mornings up to make the away trip on Mothers Day, and to WPL who were excellent hosts and good opposition.
