To the second fixture of the season and away the boys travelled to Wetherby to face both the unbeaten hosts and Otley, it was clear from the off that the boys were keen (or maybe the parents) as several players awaited the coaches arrival for warm up!

Having had a bruising encounter the previous week's fixture the hawks were hoping for a less physically challenging pair of opponents, unfortunately they would have to wait another weekend at least for this to happen.

After an intense warm up exercise, the boys took to the field to open against their hosts... a very sizeable Wetherby and with no help from the coach, confusing the opposition with Cleckheaton, the boys would clearly have their work cut out.

The coin toss was made with Sandal receiving the downhill advantage for the first half, which was used to good effect, putting away a try to lead the first half and defending well, cutting down the opposition early to avoid any demolishing runs.

The second half proved much the same as the first, but with both teams scoring a try a piece, Sandal took the first game 2-1.

The second game and Otley (with a few Otley supporting players) shortly followed, with the Hawks taking the momentum and the first game, they threw what they had against the opposition, again managing to take the win slightly more convincingly than the previous game.

Otley only managed to travel with 11 players, so in the true spirit of the game, both players from Wetherby and Otley offered support to Otley when their own team was not playing, in the final fixture of the day between Wetherby and Otley, Sandal willingly offered 7 volunteers, all wanting to squeeze in as much game time as possible.

With the above considered, the improvements made over the last season and the effort put into both Thursday night training and Sunday fixtures, this weeks Man of the Match goes to Peter Maher, well done and keep up the good work.
