This rescheduled fixture in Middlesbrough was always going to be a well contested game and it didn’t fail to deliver.
A much changed Sandal side made the trip to Middlesbrough after beating them at home at the start of the season. Sandal displayed good handling through their backs as they tried to take advantage of the wider pitch and stay out of the heavier conditions. Good defence from Sandal saw them repel Middlesbrough after sustained pressure on their try line. A last gasp recovery from Dec Thompson prevented a sure try from the opposition however the continued pressure finally took its toll and Middlesbrough took the first score. Silly penalties from Sandal saw them put themselves under more pressure however great kicking from Number 10 Hali Joannou relieved the pressure and Sandal were still very much in the game despite an additional score from Middlesbrough. A line break from Declan Thompson resulting in a throw in, rolling maul collapsed by Middlesbrough and a penalty try. Sandal went into half time 14 – 7 behind.
The second half continued in a similar vein as the first with neither side running away with it. Middlesbrough moved ahead with additional scores but strong runs from Harry Jukes and Mac Walsh threatened Middlesbrough so the game felt within grasp for Sandal. Great forward play saw Cal Burden score under the sticks and the comeback was on. Harry Jukes scored with a man to beat and showed great strength to finish. Substitute Henry West entered the fray on the right wing and showed why he’s such a great emerging talent to beat their full back and score from the right. The momentum was with Sandal and with 30 seconds on the clock, took play to 5ft of the Middlesbrough tryline however an unfortunate knock on put paid to a grandstand finale and the final whistle blew. An enjoyable game for the neutral fan and Sandal will take heart from a well contested game and left the pitch with their heads held high.
