Welcome to Sandal for our final game of the season, as we host Driffield RUFC.
Firstly, a big welcome to the players, coaches, officials and travelling supporters from Driffield. They’ve been a tough opponent for us this season and we know exactly the level of challenge they will bring this afternoon. There’s always a physical edge and a strong set piece when we face Driffield, and we expect nothing less in what should be a competitive and fitting finale.
There’s also an added edge to today’s contest, with strong links between both clubs through Doncaster Knights. With Driffield’s coaching group including Doncaster players—and with our own departing players Ollie Fox and Ben Murphy having played key roles here—there’s a real sense of connection and a bit of friendly rivalry woven into the fixture. It adds an extra twist to what is already a big afternoon.
For us, the equation is simple. One point today ensures we avoid the relegation play-off places, regardless of other results. We know that Middlesbrough RUFC will be pushing for maximum points against Harrogate RUFC, so our focus is firmly on controlling what we can. It’s in our hands, and that’s exactly where we want to be heading into the final game.
Today is also a special occasion as we say farewell to Ollie and Ben. Both have played a huge role in driving standards and supporting the group on and off the field. Their impact goes far beyond performances on a Saturday, and I’m sure you’ll all join me in thanking them and wishing them the very best in what comes next.
We’re also delighted to welcome players from Doncaster Knights who join us today for a team social and a bit of half-time entertainment. It’s always great to strengthen those relationships and add to the occasion—hopefully they enjoy the day as much as we will.
It’s also a big day across the senior section, with our 2nd XV hosting Driffield RUFC 2nd XV. The strength and progress of that group this season has been outstanding, and fixtures like this highlight the depth we are continuing to build as a club.
As always, it’s important to recognise that Sandal is more than just the 1st XV. This weekend is a huge one across the club. Our Warriors head into a National Cup semi-final tomorrow—an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the strength in depth we are continuing to build across all sections of the club. Alongside that, we host our Junior Festival, another brilliant showcase of the future of the club and the game. Good luck to everyone involved across both events.
Finally, thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, supporters and everyone behind the scenes who make days like this possible. Your support throughout the season has been invaluable.
