Sandal 2s travelled to face old rivals Huddersfield in a friendly fixture that produced plenty of free flowing rugby, with Sandal running away with the spoils. The first half had plenty of action as the teams exchanged tries, kicking duels, penalties and an injured referee.
With both Huddersfield and Sandal match day managers stepping in to take over officiating duties to allow the game to continue. Through the 1st half, Sandal seemed to get on the front foot, only to continually allow Huddersfield back into the game either with ill discipline, poor decisions or handling errors.
When we managed to put phases together Sandal were able to get the upper hand, with dominant forward carries and strong back play. Hoyland Everington and Bacon all got us on the front foot and Fawcett Handley and Roper looked threatening when the ball was spread.
Sandal will have been disappointed not to go into the break with a greater lead, but leading 19-14 nonetheless with tries coming from Fawcett Everington and Roper.
The second half saw the game open up and with this the pace in the Sandal backline came more into play and looked threatening throughout. This came to fruition with first phase tries and longer range efforts. A number of the tries were exceptional and thrilled the travelling support.
Perhaps most thrilling was a kick return, with the Huddersfield 10 taking a theatrical route to floor on the chase, Sandal capitalised and ran away. Scorers in the 2nd half Evans and West both getting doubles.
We’re back at home next week in the league action against Ilkley and very much looking to going into the halfway point in front.
