After an extended break with no rugby over the past 6 weekends, the sandal side were itching to get back to it. With a new catchphrase of milk and honey, nobody really knew what to expect, but boy did they find out.
Similar to the Driffield game, Sandal started the game with physical superiority. Booth Kay and Maher went through to front door at scrum time and the rest of the pack followed suit with ball in hand. The mighty O'Hara splashed over the line not once, but twice in the opening and Elliot soon followed suit.
At this point the game and score line could have really blown out, but credit must go to Scunthorpe who fought hard to get back into the game. Without really a set piece to play off, their 9 took numerous opportunities to tap and go literally from everywhere on the pitch. A fantastic try line tackle from Joel Adams prevented a try to Scunthorpe which at the time would probably have been deserved.
With the score at 21-0 and Scunthorpe having attacked the Sandal line for the last 15 minutes the sandal forwards were ready to go to their watering hole. On the last play, a miss placed cross kick to Henry West seemed to present the perfect opportunity to do. With every forward shouting get rid and kick it off. Instead what we got was champagne rugby.
10 yards out from his line and 1 on 1 with the winger, and in and out got him round the winger. 3 covering tacklers were skinned, 50 meters were covered before the full back was drawn in and the passed to the in rushing Ibrahim Shamchiyev. Ibs shimmied passed the final player to score what might possibly be the try of the season.
The second half brought similar joy to sandal in the opening minutes changes and we quickly found our feet with more liquid rugby. A couple of offloads and with Stevie G on the pitch we certainly moved the ball better. Atkinson was the beneficiary off a lovely bit of play involving Milner and Kittrick and soon after Ben Vickers scored a great individual try with an outrageous dummy.
The game did fizzle out towards the end and ended with a nasty head cut and a yellow card for Hulme.
The league table is very congested with 3rd and 5th separated by only 0.23 points. All the play for in the run in.
