In what can only be described as an eggstremely entertaining afternoon, the Sandal Socials—led by skipper Ben Brindley—hopped over to Wortley RUFC on Good Friday with a bumper squad and a basketful of enthusiasm.
Wortley came out of the blocks like a rabbit on rocket fuel, scoring under the posts within five minutes. But Sandal weren’t yolking around. Cam Lees scrambled over to poach his first try of the day after some tasty phase play.
Not to be outdone, Callum Evans slid in for a second after Wortley kindly hoofed the ball back to us. Cam Lees then reminded everyone he’d brought his scoring boots (and possibly a cheat code), bagging his second—and Sandal’s third—try shortly after.
Wortley hit back before the break, but Sandal’s Karl Stringer rumbled over like a runaway tractor to secure a fourth for the boys in... well, mostly matching kit. That left Sandal two tries up at half-time and ready to rotate.
Cue Si Thompson—Socials’ Head of Rugby and Chief Focaccia Baker —making wholesale changes thanks to a refreshingly deep bench.
Second half? More of the same. Ben Reynolds bulldozed over for one, before Cam Lees (yes, again) completed his hat-trick.
Wortley had the final word with a late try, but the game was already well-seasoned.
Despite the backs hogging the headlines, the real stars of this scrum-heavy showdown were the forwards. If you like set pieces, this match was basically Hamilton—just with more mud and fewer jazz hands.
Big thanks to Wortley for the hospitality and the bruises. We’ll see you at Sandal next Good Friday for the rematch!
